ABOUT VATERA and the SURROUNDING REGION
On the southern coast of Lesvos at a distance of 50 km from Mytilene, the capital of the island, is one of the largest and most beautiful beaches in Greece. It stretches for 10 km of sand and fine pebble with an average width of 40 m, and its southern geographical position protects it from the northern summer winds.
Vatera's endless stretch of beach is awarded the blue flag of the EU every year, for its clean, unspoiled, and uncrowded beach and crystal clear water.
It is an ideal spot for swimming, sailing, all sorts of water sports, fishing and boat excursions. The region is also endowed with great natural beauty, making it ideal for trekking on foot or cycling through the verdant landscape.
A short stroll (about 200m) westwards from the Hotel brings one to the Almiropotamos", the river which descends from the hot springs of Polichnitos. At the bridge lives a colony of large turtles, which come
out to greet the visitor, looking of course for bread and goodies. We always have a basket of old bread available for turtle-lovers.
Another short walk brings you to the Cape of Ayios Focas, the western-most point of the Bay of Vatera, with its ancient fishing harbour and ruins of a Temple of Dionysos.
In April and May, many guests enjoy bird-watching along the river, while others search for flowers and collect herbs. When you see fields full of bright red poppies, and smell fresh thyme, rosemary and oregano, it is quite wonderful.
A short walk from Vatera bring you to the village of Vrissa.
A visit to the Natural History Museum, with its collection of fossils found in the Vatera region, is very worthwhile, as is the interior of the main church. You can enjoy a coffee or ouzo at one of the “kafeneion” in the central square of the village. Vrissa is a real working village, quite untouched by tourism, and much enjoyed by our guests.
A short drive up the road towards the main town of Polichnitos, you will find the well-known Hot Springs (see below for more information).
